Janice Maurine Ames, 84, of Sloan Iowa, passed away Saturday, January 30, 2021 at her residence surrounded by her family.
A Funeral Service will be 11:00 A.M. Thursday, February 4, 2021 at the Evangelical Covenant Church, Sloan, Iowa with Reverend Richard Moore officiating. (Social distancing measures must be followed, Due to Covid-19 restrictions- Masks are required for the visitation and service.) Burial will follow in the Sloan Cemetery, Sloan, Iowa. Visitation will be 5:00 – 7:00 P.M. Wednesday, February 3, 2021 at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Rush Family Care Service, Onawa, Iowa.
Janice Maurine was born April 30, 1936 in Sioux City, Iowa the daughter of Maurice and Clara (Johnson) Ames. She grew up on a farm near Sloan, Iowa and graduated from Sloan High School in 1954. She went on to study music and architecture at Kansas State University, Manhattan, Kansas. In 1956 she was runner-up in the Miss Iowa Beauty Pageant.
Janice traveled the world extensively while she was a professional singer. She performed on many cruise ships and at various casinos, even once performing 103 straight shows at The Mikado in Tokyo, Japan. She also sang with the Mearl Lake Orchestra. She enjoyed writing, and talking on the phone with her friends. Janice loved caring for her herd of cats.
Janice was a member of the Evangelical Covenant Church, Sloan, Iowa.
Survivors include her two nieces, Lee Ames of Cape Cod, Massachusetts and Diana Ames of Sloan, Iowa; nephew, John Ames of Sloan, Iowa; great-nieces, Shelby Ames of Sloan, Iowa and Shaylee Ames of Anthon, Iowa; brother, Vernon Ames of Sloan, Iowa; cousin, Norman Westergaard of Sloan, Iowa; special friends, Rawley and Dirk Larson; and her beloved cats, Charmin, Puddin’ Tang, Jose, Spotty, Curly, Gracie and Muffin.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Maurice and Clara (Johnson) Ames; sister-in-law, Bonnie Ames; and niece, Molly Thomas.
