Steven “Bud” Mareau, 94, of Sloan, Iowa, passed away on Thursday, July 12, 2018, at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City.

A funeral mass will be 10:00 A.M. Monday, July 16, 2018, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Salix, Iowa, with Father Michael Erpelding celebrant. Burial will follow in St. Joseph’s Catholic Church Cemetery in Salix, with military honors provided by the Smith-Rhodes American Legion Post #295 of Sloan. Visitation will be 5:00 – 8:00 P.M. Sunday, July 15, 2018, with a scriptural wake service at 7:00 P.M., at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Rush Family Care Service in Onawa.

Steven “Bud” Mareau was born on June 11, 1924, to Ernest “Ernie” Albert and Pinkie Olive (Sams) Mareau. He grew up and attended school in the Sloan and Salix area. In 1942, he enlisted with the United States Army and served with the 96th Infantry Division. His time in the service was spent in the South Pacific, mainly in the Philippine Islands and Okinawa, Japan. While in the Philippine Islands, he was baptized in the Catholic faith. Before his honorable discharge in 1945, he earned many medals including the Bronze Star. 

He started Mareau Trucking in 1948, which he owned and operated until he retired in 2007.

Bud married Betty Jane McCord on June 26, 1946, and to this union eight children were born. He later married Ilene (Kinnaman) Tracy on May 5, 1973.

Aside from work, Bud enjoyed gardening, dancing, and bowling. He was a 75 year member of the Smith-Rhodes American Legion Post #295 of Sloan. He belonged to St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Salix.

Survivors include seven children and their spouses, Cheryl (Albert) Sutton of Carrolton, TX, Mike (Michele) Mareau of Sloan, IA, Linda Nordstrom of Sloan, IA, Pam Dailey of Albuquerque, NM, Brian (Katie) Mareau of Edgewood, NM, Teresa (Jerry) Gillespie of Albuquerque, NM, and Polly Shuck of Sioux City, IA; nineteen grandchildren; twenty-five great-grandchildren; and several great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest Mareau and Pinkie (Mareau) Galbreath; infant brother, Robert Ernest Mareau; sister, Ana Marie Kokenge; daughter, Rhonda Mareau Johnston; and wife, Ilene (Tracy) Mareau.

Memorials given to the family will be directed to St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Salix in Bud’s honor.
