Russell Ronald Struble was born November 15, 1926, in Soldier, Iowa, the third son of Merrill Fred and Ruby Jeannette (Amundson) Struble. He attended and graduated from Castana High School in 1945. Russell enlisted in the Sioux City, Iowa Air National Guard and was called to active duty in the United States Air Force from April 1, 1951 until his honorable discharge on November 2, 1951. He was stationed at Dow Air Force Base in Bangor, Maine, where he met and married Elizabeth Ann “Betty” McLaughlin.
Following his honorable discharge, they returned to Iowa where he purchased a farm amidst those of extended family members in the Loess Hills of Eastern Monona County, Iowa. He loved the land where he spent his life farming and raising their six children, four of whom also served in the United States military.
He was a member of the Grimsley-Thayer American Legion Post #502 of Castana, a member of the Monona County Farm Bureau, and a member of the First Christian Church in Onawa, Iowa.
In September of 1962, Russell was severely burned in a gas water heater fire. Although he continued to farm, he was unable to tolerate the bitter cold winters of the Midwest. He enjoyed the warm weather of South Texas, and eventually moved to Fun N Sun Resort in San Benito, Texas, where he lived for approximately 30 years. He loved the community social activities, especially square dancing, where he met his long time companion of 24 years, Daisy E. Sanders. They enjoyed traveling the United States and swimming and exercising at the resort pool. They spent many years at Fun N Sun with his sister, Rosemary (Angelo) Newkirk, and many other longtime friends.
Survivors include his children, Wm. R. “Bill” (Paula Swenson) Struble of Soldier, IA, Phylis (Vic) Sanchez of Austin, TX, Charles Struble of Soldier, IA, James (Terri) Struble of Middleville, MI, and Daniel Struble of Atlantic Beach, FL; six grandchildren, Lindi (Aaron) Roughton of Woodinville, WA, Elizabeth Bush of Austin, TX, Michael (Sara) Sanchez of Austin, TX, Ian Struble of St. Petersburg, FL, Amy Struble of Schleswig, IA, and Jamie Struble of Middleville, MI; eleven great-grandchildren, Laney Roughton, Kaley Roughton, Joshua Roughton, Zoe Bush, Jasmine Bush, James Bush, Michael Bush, Ryann Sanchez, Christian Sanchez, Landon Struble, and Autumn Struble Johansson; his longtime companion, Daisy E.
