Mary K. Grimes, 101, of Little Sioux, Iowa, passed away on Friday, December 28, 2018, in Missouri Valley, Iowa.
Graveside services will be 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, January 2, 2019, in the Little Sioux Cemetery near Little Sioux, with Elder John Carritt officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Rush Family Care Service in Onawa.
Mary Kathryn was born on November 18, 1917, in the Calhoun area of Harrison County, Iowa, to Edward John and Maggie Cecelia (McCrickard) Soles. Her parents moved to a farm between Missouri Valley and Logan, and Mary went to school at West Boyer Valley through the 8th grade. Her parents later moved to Council Bluffs, where she attended and graduated from Abraham Lincoln High School. She then worked for Kresge Dollar Store.
She married Hugh Grimes on June 1, 1941. They moved to Alhambra, California, and were living there during Pearl Harbor. Hugh was drafted into the military in February of 1942, and brought Mary back to Council Bluffs to be with her parents.
Mary went to work for the Virginia Dale Store in Omaha, and was soon the first floor manager. She worked for Brandeis as assistant to the women’s sportswear buyer, and was then promoted to buyer for the girls’ department.
When Hugh came home after the war, they bought a farm by Little Sioux and moved there. She worked at the school cafeteria for two years. When her son was ten years old, she went to work at Peoples Store in Council Bluffs as the women’s sportswear buyer. Later, Mary worked for T.L. Grantham of Des Moines as a brand manager, and then for Nichols and Associates of Tualatin, Oregon, where she retired.
Survivors include her son, Hugh “Shorty” Grimes Sr. of Woodbine, IA; grandsons, John (Dawn) Grimes of Little Sioux, IA, Hugh Grimes Jr. of Missouri Valley, IA, and Randy (Melissa) Grimes of Logan, IA; great-grandchildren, Johnny, Lacy (Ryan), Andrew, Joe, Corey, Wyatt, and Landon; and great-great-granddaughter, Riley.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Edward and Maggie Soles, and one great-grandson, Tommy Grimes.
