Leonard M. Joy, 94, of Onawa, Iowa, passed away on Thursday, May 10, 2018, at Elmwood Care Centre in Onawa.
Memorial services will be 11:00 A.M., Friday, May 18, 2018 at the First Christian Church in Onawa, Iowa with Pastor Michael Lewis, officiating. Burial will be in the Onawa Cemetery, Onawa, Iowa. Visitation will be 1 hour prior at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Rush Family Care Service in Onawa.
Leonard was born on August 10, 1923, in Logan, Iowa, one of three sons born to Atlas and Elsie (Mott) Joy. He grew up on farms in the area and graduated from Missouri Valley High School in 1941. He farmed with his father until August of 1942, and then worked for United Airlines in Wyoming as a sheet metal worker for Army aircraft. In February of 1943, he was inducted into the Army Air Corps. He served in active duty until April 14, 1945, and then in the Army Air Corps Reserves until the spring of 1952.
He married Arline Hoffman on September 28, 1952, in Omaha, Nebraska, and the couple made their home in Onawa, Iowa. He owned and operated the Oliver Implement Dealership in Onawa along with his father until 1955, at which point it became Joy Body Shop and Joy Motors. Along with auto body repair, he used the education he received from the military for aircraft maintenance and sales, charter work, running an air ambulance, and teaching aviation.
Leonard and Arline purchased a farm near Mapleton in 1963, and moved there in 1987. They returned to live in Onawa in 2013.
He was a member of the First Christian Church in Onawa.
Survivors include his wife, Arline Joy, and his son, Jim Joy, both of Onawa, IA.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Atlas and Elsie Joy; two brothers, Gene Joy and Robert Joy; and his daughter, Janet Joy.
