John R. Strain, 58, of Onawa, Iowa died unexpectedly Sunday, November 4, 2018 at his residence near Onawa, Iowa.
A memorial visitation will be 5:00 to 8:00 P.M. Friday, November 9, 2018 at the Rush Family Chapel in Onawa, Iowa. A private family burial will be at a later date in the Little Sioux Cemetery, Little Sioux, Iowa. Arrangements are under the direction of Rush Family Care Service, Onawa, Iowa.
John Robert Strain was born August 15, 1960 in Missouri Valley, Iowa the son of Donald “Wayne” and Nina L. (Boggs) Strain.
John grew up in Modale, Iowa and graduated from West Harrison High School in 1978. He furthered his education at Northwest Missouri State University where he received his Bachelors of Science Degree.
John worked for the Iowa Department of Natural Resources “DNR”. He worked out of the Missouri River Wildlife Unit in Whiting, Iowa, Ingham Wildlife Unit in Estherville, Iowa, and for the Youth Conservation Corp. at the Desoto National Wildlife Refuge in Missouri Valley, Iowa.
He loved fishing, hunting, and spending time in the outdoors. He enjoyed spending time with his friends playing darts, and was an avid reader.
Survivors include his mother, Nina L. Strain of Modale, Iowa; sister, Julie (Jeff) Shelton of Modale, Iowa; two nieces, Paige (Chase Durfee) Shelton of Little Sioux, Iowa and Blaire Shelton of Omaha, Nebraska; other relatives and many friends.
He was preceded in death by his father, Donald “Wayne” Strain; paternal grandparents, John W. “Johnnie” and Mildred L. (Alexander) Strain; maternal grandfather, R. D. Boggs; and maternal grandmother, Elvera (German) Boggs.
In lieu of flowers, memorials in John’s memory may be made to the “Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation” to restore and protect wildlife habitat in Monona County, Iowa, and may be mailed to his Mom, Nina L. Strain, P.O. Box 35 Modale, Iowa 51556.
